Tornado Season is Here

Tornado season is here on the U.S. Great Plains. Typically, tornadoes are most frequent in northern Texas and Oklahoma during April and early May and then the threat expands northward as Spring turns into early Summer. By early June, the tornado threat is typically greatest over eastern Colorado, Nebraska, and into South Dakota although tornadoes can occur anytime-anywhere.

Cedar Hill, TX tornado - 29 Apr 2009

This particular tornado pictured above was observed in the eastern Texas panhandle near Cedar Hill on April 29th. The only damage that resulted from this tornado were some downed power lines. I participate in tornado research programs and have witnessed a considerable number of tornadoes and have been on damage surveys. Unfortunately, most of the damaged I’ve observed has been to agriculture equipment and crops where little or nothing can be done to prevent damage.
